Welcome

This is a collection of written pieces that comes from things I’ve thought and experienced; occasionally they are illustrated with photos that I’ve taken. They are here because I want people to enjoy them. This is a sort of print performance and as with other kinds of performance it is a meaningless exercise without an audience. So be my audience ...

DEATH OF A WAHOO

It is Sunday morning on 20 January 2013, a beautiful day, and the boat is 3 or 4 miles off the South Florida coast, Delray Beach and Boca Raton can be seen on the coastline. They are fishing, moving quickly through the water and towing six lines bearing several different kinds of bait and lure.

There is a strike:

And Marcus starts to take the strain of landing what is obviously going to be a big fish:

As the fish loses the battle and is drawn close to the boat Cap'n Cley gaffs it and pulls it up and into the boat. Recognising it as a Wahoo he and Marcus know that there is some danger as the multi-toothed creature is brought into the well of the boat where sandalled feet and hands are within easy snapping distance:

Marcus holds the fish at arm's length:

Marcus and Cap'n Cley admire their catch:

And into the ice locker (which is a little too small)  it goes:

Back on land Marcus proudly displays their catch before it goes off to Cap'n Cley's fish shop to sell at around $15 a pound.
