Welcome

This is a collection of written pieces that comes from things I’ve thought and experienced; occasionally they are illustrated with photos that I’ve taken. They are here because I want people to enjoy them. This is a sort of print performance and as with other kinds of performance it is a meaningless exercise without an audience. So be my audience ...

THE STRANGEST PICTURE I'VE EVER TAKEN

I took this photograph about three and a half years ago, in a French seaside town called Locquerec. The scene is a 'braderie' - a French version of a car boot sale - which was held on the beach. I've shown it to friends and some have been very disturbed by it. It disturbs me as well. There's probably a completely innocent explanation as to why this man has bought this ... doll, is it? Thought it would be nice for his daughter, perhaps? I suppose it is the fact that someone, some company, has thought that there would be a genuine children's market for it, that disturbs me. I'll spare you an enlargement of the face but at this size you can see the eyes and the mouth and they seem to me to be created more with an adult market in mind. I suppose a normal human reaction to the sight of this would be a shudder. What do you think about it?
